Pediatric Tooth Extractions in Shreveport, LA

When it comes to ensuring your child's oral health, sometimes a tooth extraction is the best course of action. At Miles For Smiles, our skilled dental team is here to guide you through the process. We'll explain when an extraction might be necessary, walk you through the procedure, and share what you can expect before and after your visit with us.

Pediatric Tooth Extractions Explained

The procedure involves removing a child's primary tooth or, less often, a permanent tooth when preservation isn't feasible. Though we prioritize saving teeth, extraction is the best solution in certain cases. Common reasons include severe, unfixable cavities, dental infections or abscess, trauma causing tooth fractures, impaction obstructing tooth eruption, and baby teeth that overstayed their welcome.

We employ two main techniques. In a simple extraction, a visible tooth is gently removed with local anesthesia. Conversely, surgical extraction, necessary for broken or unerupted teeth, may involve an incision and sutures. Detailed X-rays assist in planning to safeguard adjacent teeth.

Why Consider Pediatric Tooth Extractions?

  • Stops pain and clears dental infection before it spreads.
  • Protects the developing permanent tooth bud underneath.
  • Prevents damage to nearby teeth, gums, and bone.
  • Creates space to support healthy eruption and future alignment.
  • Improves chewing and comfort when a tooth is too damaged to function.

If a back baby tooth exits early, we may recommend a space maintainer to preserve room for an incoming permanent tooth, aiding in orthodontic planning and reducing future crowding.

The Pediatric Tooth Extraction Process

  • Exam and imaging: Our general dentists will evaluate the tooth, gums, and roots with an exam and X-rays to confirm the best approach.
  • Comfort options: Local anesthesia numbs the area. Many children do well with nitrous oxide (laughing gas). For higher anxiety or complex cases, oral or IV sedation may be considered.
  • Tooth removal: Gentle motion loosens the tooth from the ligament (the tissue holding it in place) before it is lifted out. For surgical cases, a small opening and limited bone removal may be needed.
  • Protection and closure: The site is cleaned, and gauze is placed for pressure. Dissolving sutures (stitches that dissolve on their own) are used when indicated.
  • Post-visit guidance: Written instructions cover bleeding control, diet, hygiene, and pain relief. Follow-up may include checking healing or placing a space maintainer.

Your Child's Experience: Before And After

Before the appointment, a light meal is usually fine, unless sedation is planned, which comes with fasting instructions. Dress your child in comfortable clothing, and bring along a favorite small toy or blanket for added comfort.

During the visit, the area will be thoroughly numbed. Children typically feel pressure but no sharp pain. Many extractions for baby teeth are swift once numbed.

Afterwards, mild oozing is typical for several hours. Following our guidance to bite on clean gauze with pressure is important. For discomfort, appropriate doses of over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may help—never give aspirin to children.

  • Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek in 10-minute intervals to reduce swelling.
  • Offer soft, cool foods such as yogurt, applesauce, eggs, pasta, and smoothies (without straws) for the first day.
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods and no straws for 48 to 72 hours.
  • Keep fingers and tongue away from the site while it heals.
  • Begin gentle brushing the next day, avoiding the socket. Older children can rinse with warm salt water after 24 hours.

Gum tissue usually closes in one to two weeks, with bone filling in over the coming months. If a permanent tooth is on the horizon, you may see it emerge on schedule post-healing.
